What does Sensei really mean? 先生

先生 Sen Sei (Pronounced Sen Say) is not a title that one calls themselves. But rather something a student refers to them as, a teacher or instructor.

Literally translating to Sen (Before) Sei (Life) ‘One who has lived before you’ or in other words one who has knowledge or ‘Lived experience’ you do not yet have.

Our Dojo’s head instructor Sensei Hutton has the following direct lineage to the founder of Goju Ryu.

Sensei Chojun Miyagi - Founder Goju Ryu
Sensei Anichi Miyagi - 10th Dan
Sensei Morio Higaonna - 10th Dan
Sensei Graham Ravey - 8th Dan
Sensei Terry Lyon - 6th Dan
Sensei Ben Hutton

And within the TOGKA, thanks to Sensei Graham Ravey and in Western Australia Sensei Lyon, Sensei Jimbo Gloriod and others, there has been a specific focus on keeping the traditional undiluted teachings of Okinawan Goju Ryu, unaltered over the past 40+ years.

This continues today at TOGKA Bassendean where Sensei Ben Hutton continues to teach the knowledge that has been passed down in an unbroken line.
